Support for Utility Loss Reduction Program in NEDCO Under West Africa Energy Program (WAEP)
The USAID-funded West Africa Energy Program (WAEP) was a four-year initiative supporting Power Africa’s goal to expand access to affordable and reliable grid electricity in West Africa through technical assistance, capacity building, and transactional support. As a sub-contractor, Arthur Energy Advisors (AEA) assisted the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) to enhance operational performance under the program.
AEA’s work led to the regularization of 4,792 unregistered customers to the billing list, remedying 1,132 illegal abstractions and anomalous connections, and replacing 13 overloaded transformers with higher-capacity underloaded units. These interventions delivered an estimated annual savings of 9.72 GWh, revenue savings of over USD 1.15 million, at a project cost of USD 0.56 million, yielding a rate of return exceeding 100%, while providing data-driven recommendations to improve both technical and commercial performance in targeted zones.
